TYPE: Research Project
LOCATION: Boots library
This design research project addresses the environmental impact of disposable coffee cups and lids—specifically those branded by Starbucks—that are currently non-recyclable and widely used within shared spaces such as cafés and libraries. Compounding this issue is the unclear waste disposal system in these environments, which creates confusion and results in improper sorting of waste.
The project explores how we might implement a more sustainable and efficient waste management system by redesigning both the coffee cups and the waste bins used within the premises. Through a human-centered design approach, we employed a range of research methods—including observational studies, user interviews, and system mapping—to understand user behaviors, identify pain points, and inform actionable solutions. The outcome aims to promote environmental responsibility through thoughtful design, enhancing clarity, usability, and eco-conscious decision-making in everyday routines.
